Lake Erie is world famous for its great walleye and perch fishing - just ask any of the fishermen who travel from around the country to throw a worm into the lake. And because Put in Bay is in Lake Erie's fertile western basin, we have walleye, perch, catfish, bass and crappie in abundance. In fact, the waters around the Lake Erie Islands boast the best perch, walleye and bass fishing in the Great Lakes. More than 80% of walleye caught in Ohio come from our area of Lake Erie!
When is the best time for you to come to Put in Bay for a fishing trip? Many fishermen start flocking to the island in early April for the perch, walleye, bass and crappie that live in the shallow waters along the shore. As the weather heats up, the walleye move into the deeper parts of the lake and the catfish are at their peak. As fall starts, the fish move back closer to the island. And as for the winter? Put in Bay is the ideal spot to base your ice fishing adventure.
Fishing licenses and any gear you might need, including live tackle, are available at Wharfside, located next to the Boardwalk. Wharfside will also freeze your fish if you don't have the capabilities to. For 2006 Ohio fishing licenses, click here
The Aquatic Resource Center, located on the island's Western shore, gives kids of all ages the chance to try their luck at fishing. No licenses are needed to fish from their docks, and equipment is available for you to borrow - all for free. The center also has live fish displays, a play center, and information about the state hatchery, so even if you don't catch anything you still have the opportunity to see some Lake Erie walleye and perch up close.
You can also fish from the docks at South Bass Island State Park at the end of Catawba Avenue and Oak Point State Park on Bay View Avenue.
Licenses are available from March 1, 2006 to February 28, 2007.
