Toledo Yacht Clubs Mills Cup Sailing Races! A Test Of Skill And Speed

Originally started in 1907 as a test of navigational skills, the Mills Cup Race has evolved into the premier sailing race on Lake Erie. The Mills Cup race is held the second weekend after Memorial Day Weekend each year. This annual race is unique in that the race is held at night. Since 1981, the race has begun at the Toledo Harbor light and ended at Put-in-Bay Ohio. At the completion of the race, the sailing vessels proceed to the reserved downtown Put-in-Bay Docks for a celebration in the marina. There are 5 classes in the race.

The Put-in-Bay Yacht club has been involved in the hosting of the nighttime race for over 35 years. It’s truly a sight to see as these colorful vessels make their way into the harbor.

Mills Cup Events

While the Mills Cups Race is the main event, there are numerous other events taking place on this great weekend including their famous party held on the lawn of the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. The party is open to the public and is a great opportunity to see some of the boats that will race the next evening. A post-race party is held Saturday afternoon at the yacht club and includes music, refreshments, and the official release of the racing results.
